I begin each session with a relationship-building activity called "Session Opening." I ask the student about their day or week, discuss their interests, and start a discussion about their hobbies and extracurricular activities. Then, use leading questions to encourage students to draw connections between today's topic and their relevant prior knowledge. Next, provide a list of steps for using a formula, show how to compose or analyze a specific kind of material with a written example.
