Ammar is an Honours graduate in Arabic Language and Communication from USIM, Malaysia. Teaching Method(s)
Ṭarīqah Mubāsharah (the Direct Method) in teaching Arabic focuses on immersing students in the target language by using Arabic exclusively in instruction, encouraging them to think, speak, and respond directly in Arabic without relying on translation to their mother tongue. The approach emphasizes listening and speaking first, followed by reading and writing, using real-life contexts, visual aids, gestures, and interactive activities to convey meaning. In applying this method to Malaysia’s primary and secondary school Arabic language modules, lessons can be structured so that vocabulary, dialogues, and grammar are introduced through situational conversation and role-play (e.g., greetings, classroom instructions, daily routines), supported by pictures, props, and actions to ensure comprehension. For younger learners, the focus can be on simple communicative exchanges and storytelling with repetition, while for secondary students, the method can incorporate more complex topics, debates, and discussions entirely in Arabic, aligning with the national curriculum’s themes while fostering fluency, confidence, and cultural understanding.
