I always believed that's there no single way to learn something and one's need to discover what his/her style of learning. A student may prefer visual and auditory learning style where he/she needs maps/diagram/recording to grasp the concept. Others may engaged in active discussion/conversation with friends to understand a concept. That's also applied to your children! Fortunately I have been teaching plenty of learners with unique style in the past and all of the are amazing in their own way.
