About Me
Hello, I'm Aiman, an incoming PhD student in Applied and Computational Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh and a recent Master's graduate in Theoretical Physics from the University of Cambridge. Prior to that, I graduated top of my class in Mathematical Physics at the University of Edinburgh. I wasn't always the typical 'top student' in school. Through A-Levels and university, I gradually developed the study habits, problem-solving skills, and mathematical intuition that helped me succeed and, more importantly, genuinely enjoy the subjects I was learning. Because of that journey, I approach teaching with patience and empathy. I understand that every student learns differently, and I aim to make mathematics and physics feel less intimidating, more intuitive, and ultimately more rewarding. Alongside my studies, I mentored first-year university students through the MathBuddies peer support programme at the University of Edinburgh. I found the experience incredibly fulfilling and discovered a genuine passion for helping others build confidence in technical subjects. I am now looking to tutor students across a range of levels, including SPM, IGCSE, A-Levels, and undergraduate mathematics and physics. For me, tutoring is more than a summer job. It is an opportunity to develop the teaching skills that complement my long-term goal of becoming both a researcher and educator. Whether you're aiming for top grades, preparing for university, or simply looking to strengthen your understanding of a subject, I am committed to helping you achieve your goals in a supportive and encouraging learning environment.
Teaching Method(s)
My teaching approach is adaptable and student-centered, grounded in the belief that genuine understanding and mathematical fluency are far more valuable than rote memorisation. I aim to build independent, confident learners who are comfortable with being uncomfortable—able to adapt, self-teach, and approach unfamiliar problems with resilience. For school-level students (SPM, IGCSE, A-Level), I aim to focus on developing strong fundamentals through analogies, clear explanations, and plenty of practice with essential algebraic and mathematical tools. I prioritise understanding over shortcut memorisation, while also guiding students in exam strategy—such as recognising patterns in common question types, mastering time management, and leveraging easier problems to accumulate marks efficiently. I also help students develop flexible thinking for tackling unfamiliar or ‘out-of-the-box’ questions. At the undergraduate or adult level, I emphasise conceptual clarity, logical structure, mathematical rigour, and the 'why' behind key ideas. I draw on my experience in mathematical physics to show how abstract concepts fit into a larger picture, particularly for those studying technical subjects like physics or engineering. My lessons are not one-sided. I encourage students to bounce ideas back, verbalise their reasoning, and actively engage in the learning process. This interactive style helps break down abstract topics and fosters deeper, long-lasting understanding. Above all, I strive to help students become independent thinkers who are fluent in the language of mathematics and confident in their own learning journey.
